Whats happening in Alfold and Loxwood this week?

Dear Friends,

Who is really in charge of our world?

In Acts 2:22–36, Peter stands before the crowd and announces that the Jesus they crucified has been raised from the dead and exalted to the highest place. The verdict of earth has been overturned by the verdict of heaven: “God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”

That means Jesus is not merely a figure from history, a helpful teacher, or someone we can safely ignore. He is the risen and reigning King—and every one of us must decide how we will respond to him.

Please join us this Sunday as we hear this wonderful news together. Do read Acts 2:22–36 beforehand, and come ready to see why the resurrection and reign of Jesus change everything.

We meet twice this coming Sunday morning in St Nicholas Alfold.

  • 8.30am | BCP Morning Prayer

  • 10am | Holy Communion | with groups for the kids & followed by coffee.

Everyone is welcome & we’d love to see you there!

With love in Christ,

Revd. James Forward

Whats happening in Alfold and Loxwood this week?

Dear Friends,

This Sunday we are letting fete decide the topic of our sermon!

It’s the Loxwood Village Fete on Saturday 6th June 11am-4pm, and come rain or shine the church will be there to support and serve our villages. Do come along to show your support!

At our stall we are running “Let Fete Decide” a public vote to let the fete choose which sermon will be preached on Sunday. The choices are:

  • Why does God allow suffering?

  • Has Science disproved God?

Our prayer is that people will vote on the Saturday, and then come along to church on the Sunday.

Is this a good idea? Did we come up with the name we liked first and then reverse engineer the idea later? (YES). Will the Vicar be able to write two potential sermons ahead of Sunday? Will he be too concussed after soak the vicar to say anything coherent?

Come and find out!

We meet two times this coming Sunday morning in St John the Baptist Loxwood.

  • 8.30am | BCP Morning Prayer

  • 10am | Holy Communion | with groups for the kids & followed by coffee.

And we meet once in the evening at St Nicholas Alfold.

  • 6pm | Evensong | Psalm 147

Everyone is welcome & we’d love to see you there!

With love in Christ,

Whats happening in Alfold and Loxwood this week?

Dear Friends,

This Sunday we’ll be looking at Acts 2:14–21, where Peter explains what happened on the day of Pentecost. The Holy Spirit has been poured out on all God’s people — young and old, men and women, ordinary people like us — so that we might speak of Jesus and play our part in his mission. It’s easy to think, “Not me: I’m too young, too old, too shy, too ordinary, too sinful.” But God says otherwise. Come and hear why, because of the Spirit, every Christian can say: “Count me in.”

In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.”

Acts 2:17

We meet twice this coming Sunday morning in St John the Baptist Loxwood.

  • 8.30am | BCP Holy Communion

  • 10am | ALL-AGE Worship | followed by coffee.

Whats happening in Alfold and Loxwood this week?

Dear Friends,

In a world that is sometimes chaotic, and very often confusing - where do you look?

In our passage on Sunday, the apostles find themselves without their leader, with a man down, with a remarkably small band of disciples, and with a world-wide mission to accomplish. And the place where they look, for encouragement and direction, is the word of God.

That is where we are going to look on Sunday, as we study Acts 1:12-26. If you get the chance please do have a read through beforehand. My prayer is that we will trust that through God’s word, Jesus will change the world.

We meet twice this coming Sunday morning in Loxwood Church.

  • 8.30am | BCP Holy Communion

  • 10am | Family Worship | with Kid’s groups and followed by coffee.

Our Annual Parochial Church Meeting will follow the conclusion of the 10am service after a short coffee break. We will aim to start at about 11.30am.

Everyone is welcome & we’d love to see you there!

This is our one, whole-church ‘business’ meeting of the year, and is an important chance for us to reflect back on and give thanks to God for all that happened in 2025, and look to the year ahead. It is also the chance to elect who will represent and lead us on PCC in the years to come. If you are a member of the church, please come along. And if you want to vote, please do fill out an Electoral Roll form at the back of church. APCM Report packs will be available in Church soon for prior reading.

Whats happening in Alfold and Loxwood this week?

Dear Friends,

How does the gospel (the good news about Jesus) spread & grow from 120 believers, camped in an upper room, to the 2.4 billion Christians in the world today?

Well we are about to find out as we embark on our new sermon series through the book of Acts. It’s a story with earthquakes, imprisonments, shipwrecks, and most of all, it’s the story of what God continues to do in the world through his Spirit, Word, and Church.

The Forwards have a family wedding this weekend, so we will be sad to miss you. But Andy Beattie is going to kick us off with Acts 1:1-11 - please have a read through beforehand if you get the chance. And I’m delighted to say that Revd. Jacob Harrison, the Chaplain at Cranleigh School, will lead our 10am communion service.

We meet twice this coming Sunday morning in Alfold Church.

  • 10am | Family Communion | with Kid’s groups and followed by coffee.

Everyone is welcome & we’d love to see you there!

Parish Mag Photo Competition

As some of you will know by now, the Parish Mag will undergo a major redesign from the April edition. It will be printed professionally and will be distributed to every home in the parish, every month. I am the new editor and Filip Wach is in charge of advertising.

The new design will feature a strong photo, normally of somewhere in our beautiful villages, on every front cover. We very much hope that members of our congregation, as well as the children in the school and the community in general, will contribute.

So if you would like to send some to me I would be delighted to consider them. Photos taken on a decent mobile phone should be fine. The only rules are that they must have been taken by someone locally (but not a professional photographer) and have not appeared in print elsewhere. And they must be given free and without any copyright complications!

Please send them through to me at parish.mag.editor@alflox.org, saying where and when they were taken.

I can't wait to see how good they are!

Many thanks

Whats happening in Alfold and Loxwood this week?

Dear Friends,

Over Easter we tend to think about the difference that it makes that Jesus rose again. But what difference does it make that Jesus is still alive?

On Sunday we are coming to end of Luke’s Gospel (it’s only taken us three years!). And as we see Jesus ascending to heaven, still praying a prayer of blessing over his disciples, we are going to ask “What difference does it make to our faith and life that Jesus is still alive?”

SPOILER… It makes all the difference.

We meet twice this coming Sunday morning in Alfold Church. We will be studying Luke 24:50-53 & Acts 1:1-2, If you get the chance, do have a read through beforehand.

  • 8.30am | BCP Holy Communion

  • 10am | Family Worship | with Kid’s groups and followed by coffee.

Everyone is welcome & we’d love to see you there!

With love in Christ,

Church Family Easter News 05.04.26

Whats happening in Alfold and Loxwood this week?

Dear Friends,

I sometimes struggle to know how to be on Good Friday… It’s a sad and serious day, and so I know that we should be somewhat serious ourselves.

But I also know the end of the story… I’ve read ahead and I know what’s coming on Sunday! And so I find myself confused in Easter week - How should I be feeling? What should my face being doing? When can I start wishing people a ‘Happy Easter!’?

But I heard something at Guildford Cathedral this morning that made a lot of sense. At least to me…

They said that Good Friday, the day that Jesus died on the cross, is like a stained glass window. We look at it. And we admire it for it’s own beauty and detail.

But we also look through it to what’s beyond. To Easter Sunday, the day that Jesus rose again. To the resurrection hope and light that comes from the empty tomb.

And as that light of resurrection hope shines through from behind, it makes the cross itself look all the more wonderful!

So if you see an odd look on my face this week, that is what I’m thinking about. I’m looking at the cross, illuminated from behind by Easter Sunday. And I want to invite you, whoever you are, whatever your background to come and look too.

  • Maundy Thursday Bring & Share. Bring a dish to share, and join us as we remember the Last Supper. 2nd April | Loxwood | 5.30pm

  • Good Friday. A reflective service of readings, hymns and silence as we remember Jesus’ death for us. 3rd April | Loxwood | 2pm

  • Dawn Service. A shared service with Emmanuel Chapel. Worship the Risen Son as the sun rises. 5th April | New Songhurst Farm, Merry Hills Lane, Loxwood. What Three Words location ///attending.flinch.poster | 6.30am

  • Easter Celebration. “He is not here, he is alive!” An All-Age service including an Easter Egg Hunt for the children. 5th April | Alfold | 10am.

  • Please note:

    • There is no 8.30am or Evensong Service on Easter Sunday.

    • That the Easter 10am is taking place in St Nicholas Alfold.

    • And that there will be no Monday Morning Prayer meeting on the 6th April. Resumes on the 13th.

Everyone is welcome & we’d love to see you there!

With love in Christ,

Revd. James Forward

Whats happening in Alfold and Loxwood this week?

Dear Friends,

A lot can happen in a week.

On Palm Sunday, Jesus processed into Jerusalem to the praise and cheers of the crowd. One week later he led a very different kind of procession... To the place called ‘The Skull’. Unable to carry his own cross. To the sound of weeping and mocking from the crowd.

You are welcome to come and join us for our ALL-AGE Palm Sunday Service at 10am to discover what happened? Why the change? And what does it teach us about the King at the centre of it all?

And you are welcome to join us for the rest of Holy Week, leading up to Easter Sunday. Details below.

We meet twice this coming Sunday morning in Loxwood Church. We will be in Luke 19:32-38 &23:26-35 as we follow Jesus on his two processions, asking “What kind of a King is this?” If you get the chance, do have a read through beforehand.

  • 8.30am | BCP Holy Communion

  • 10am | ALL-AGE Worship | followed by coffee.

Everyone is welcome & we’d love to see you there!

With love in Christ,

Revd. James Forward

So if you would like to send some to me I would be delighted to consider them. Photos taken on a decent mobile phone should be fine. The only rules are that they must have been taken by someone locally (but not a professional photographer) and have not appeared in print elsewhere. And they must be given free and without any copyright complications!

Whats happening in Alfold and Loxwood this week?

Dear Friends,

This week it’s Mothering Sunday! A day when traditionally workers would be be given the weekend off, to go home and visit their ‘mother’ church. But now it’s a day on which we give thanks to God for our mums, grandmas, and all the women in church who love us, look after us, and point us to Jesus.

So do come along (no need to go back to the parish where you were born!) and celebrate Mother’s Day with us.

We are also going to use this Sunday at 10am to say a very fond farewell to Hugh and Linda Beadle. Hugh and Linda have been part of our church for the past 44 years, and so there will be some tears and some memories, as we wave goodbye to them, as they move up to Scotland to be nearer family.

We meet twice this coming Sunday morning in Loxwood Church. We will be in Luke 22:54-62 as we take a look at Peter’s life, and what we can learn of God’s grace from it. If you get the chance, please do read through beforehand.

  • 8.30am | BCP Holy Communion

  • 10am | Mother’s Day | with Kid’s groups and followed by coffee.

As part of the service we are going to sing a new song together that fits particularly well with the theme of our sermon. If you wanted to have a listen beforehand, you can do so here.

Everyone is welcome & we’d love to see you there!

With love in Christ,

Revd. James Forward

Whats happening in Alfold and Loxwood this week?

Dear Friends,

When you head into church on Sunday, keep an eye out for our brand new Bibles! They are a gift, left in her will by Cicely Green, the mother of Liz Simpson and grandmother of Emily Cross.

We are so grateful for them! They are the NIV 2011 translation, and they find a great blend of Biblical scholarship, and being easy to read.

For those doing the readings in church, you can find the same translation on a website called Bible Gateway . And if you want to listen to it being read by Hercule Poirot actor David Suchet you can do so here!

Let’s give thanks for these new Bibles and pray that God’s word would be a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our heart.

We meet twice this coming Sunday morning at Loxwood Church. Where we will be in Luke 22:1-38 as we join Jesus and his disciples in the upper room for the last supper. If you get the chance, please do read through beforehand.

  • 8.30am | BCP Morning Prayer

  • 10am | Holy Communion | with Kid’s groups and followed by coffee.

We also meet at 6pm in Alfold Church for Evensong. Where Scott Bilthouse will be preaching on Psalm 145.

I won’t be with you in the morning, as I am preaching at Emmanuel Chapel, on Spy Lane in Loxwood on Sunday morning. Please pray for a growing gospel partnership across the churches.

Everyone is welcome & we’d love to see you there!

With love in Christ,

Whats happening in Alfold and Loxwood this week?

Dear Friends,

It was with great sadness, last week on holiday, that I learned of the Bishop of Guildford’s cancer diagnosis. I was grateful for Richard and Emily’s email of last week sharing + Andrew’s letter with you. I have just received another update that I would like to share with you. You can read it here. Please do keep Beverly, Andrew and their family in your prayers.

Bishop Paul and the Diocese of Guildford are coming together on Monday at Guildford Cathedral for a day of prayer, with the centre point being the 5.30pm Choral Evensong service. If you are able, please do join me there. You can read + Paul’s letter of invitation with more information here.

We meet twice this coming Sunday morning at Alfold Church. Where we will be in Luke 21:5-38 as Jesus teaches on the end of the world and what to expect while we wait. If you get a chance, please do have a read through beforehand.

  • 8.30am | BCP Holy Communion

  • 10am | Family Worship | with Kid’s groups and followed by coffee.

We will also meet midweek, for Geoff Davidson’s Funeral. Alfold Church - 1pm.

Everyone is welcome & we’d love to see you there!

With love in Christ,

Revd. James Forward

Many thanks

Iain Taylor

Whats happening in Alfold and Loxwood this week?

Dear Friends,

There are exciting things happening with our Parish Magazine that I want to share with you.

As you will know the Parish Mag is a long running and much loved part of village life. It has got a tremendous ‘local feel’ which means that it is read and used regularly.

Hugh and Linda Beadle have been so faithful in their roles as Editor and Advertising Secretary for the Mag. And we want to say an ENORMOUS thank you to them as they step down.

As both of our villages grow, there are two big changes to the Mag that we are going to make from the April 26 edition:

  1. Firstly, we’re going to deliver to all 1500 homes, for free, each month.

  2. And we are going to print professionally, with some pages in colour.

We hope to retain that same local feel. But we hope, that by going to every home, we can better share what is going on at church, and in local clubs and groups and businesses with our community. There is so much going on in our villages, and we want everyone to know about it!

But we need your help! Magazines like this are only as good as what’s inside…

We meet twice this coming Sunday morning at St Nicholas Alfold. Where we will be in Luke 20:20-40. If you get a chance, please do have a read through beforehand.

  • 8.30am | BCP Morning Prayer

  • 10am | Communion Service | with Kid’s groups and followed by coffee.

N.B. As I will be on away on holiday next week, the YEAR of PRAYER Monday Prayer Meeting, will meet in Alfold Church Room from 10am-Midday this week, run by Richard Allan.

Everyone is welcome & we’d love to see you there!
