Christmas

Christmas is coming. The geese are getting fat. Jesus gives us joy! And we want to share that…

There is loads going on this Christmas, and so many opportunities to bring our friends and neighbours along…

Christmas Trees and Foodbank

As we move towards celebrating the Joy of the First Christmas, we are offering our Church Family the opportunity to share this with each other by taking one of the gift tags provided, writing a message and tying it to the Christmas tree in both Alfold and Loxwood churches.

At the same time, we are also asking that you think of those in need of food at this special time. If possible, add one or two of the festive items shown to your Christmas food shop; this will help create ‘Festive Hampers’. Please place your gifts in the boxes provided at each church before 17th December. The items will then be taken to Cranleigh Food Bank, demonstrating God's love and support to people in need in Cranleigh and surrounding villages.

Whats happening in Alfold and Loxwood this week?

Dear Friends,

There is lots going on this coming Sunday!

It’s the start of Advent, that season when we look forward to Christ’s coming. His first at Christmas, and his second TBC! For Advent we will be starting our new “God Made Flesh” series. Asking what it means that Jesus became like us, born of flesh and bone to Mary in Bethlehem.

It’s also an ALL-AGE service at the 10am. Meaning that families will stay in throughout and we will worship God all together from the very youngest to the very oldest. Andy Beattie is going to be preaching on John 14:1-14.

Last, but by no means least! Angus Gibson is being baptised at the 10am. Come and support him as he takes this important step of publicly proclaiming what he believes. Please do be praying for Angus in the coming weeks and months!

All are welcome to join us at Loxwood church on Sunday.

  • 8:30am - BCP Holy Communion.

  • 10:00am - ALL-AGE Advent Sunday, with Angus’ Baptism. Refreshments afterwards.

Everyone is welcome & we’d love to see you there!

With love in Christ,

Whats happening in Alfold and Loxwood this week?

Dear Friends,

In our final Sunday in Paul’s letter to the Colossians, we are going to be encouraged with Paul’s words to…

Make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation always be full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.”

Colossians 4:5&6

That is not always an easy thing to do. But we do have some wonderful opportunities coming up to share Christ with our friends, family and neighbours over Christmas and into the New Year. Not least with our exciting new Alpha Course starting on the 5th of Jan. Read more below the line!

If you ever have any safeguarding concerns. Even if something just feels a little ‘off’ and you are unsure. Please know that you can get in touch with any member of our team, or with the Guildford Diocesan Safeguarding Team and you will be listened to and taken seriously.

Church Family News 02.11.25

Whats happening in Alfold and Loxwood this week?

Dear Friends,

This Sunday morning we are thinking through what it means to have our ‘hearts and minds set on things above’ in three big areas of life:

  • In Church

  • In the Home

  • And at Work

Paul - having told us about all that has been given to us in Christ, then sets out the wonderfully real (and challenging) implications for our day-to-day lives, as we try to follow Christ. My prayer for Sunday morning is that we leave inspired to ‘take off the old and put on the new’.

As Paul moves to apply the gospel to family life, he draws into focus the relationship between wives and husbands (Colossians 3:18-21).

What the Bible teaches here certainly is enormously counter-cultural, and might be quite new to some of us. And I’m just aware that it may raise lots of good questions for us.

So after the main service on Sunday, Katie and I will be running a Marriage Q&A for anyone who would like to join. We don’t hold ourselves up as the experts here, but we do try to live out this teaching in our marriage, and so we will share some of what we’ve learned along the way. Please feel free to ask us anything that is on your mind!

After the service we will break for coffee for 20 mins, and then reconvene back in church for the Q&A.

On Sunday evening we have our All Souls Memorial Service at 4pm. The service will include a chance to remember and give thanks to God for those we love who have died.

Every family from our villages who has had a funeral in the past few years has been personally invited - but all are welcome.

After the service there will be refreshments served in Alfold Church Room.

For more details, please see the invitation below.

There will be no 6pm Evensong service this Sunday.

We meet twice this coming Sunday morning in Loxwood Church. Looking together at Colossians 3:15-4:1…

  • 8:30am - BCP Morning Prayer

  • 10:00am - Family Communion, with groups for the kids & followed by refreshments & Q&A.

and once in the afternoon at Alfold…

  • 4pm - All Souls Memorial Service - Alfold.

Everyone is welcome & we’d love to see you there!

With love in Christ,

Revd. James Forward

Giving Sunday

On Sunday 23rd of November we are going to be joined by Revd. David Senior from Guildford Diocese who has oversight of Stewardship and Evangelism.

He will be preaching for us, and is going to be helping us to think about the joy of giving, and how our generosity can fund our goal to share the gospel with our villages and with the next generation.

Steven Board and I will be writing to you in the next few weeks to ask you to prayerfully consider your monthly giving.

Whats happening in Alfold and Loxwood this week?

Dear Friends,

Join us this coming Sunday as we continue to think through what it means that we are raised with Christ, and what that means for our day-to-day lives as Christians. All from Colossians 3:1-14.

We are also delighted to be baptising Leonora Joan May, great-granddaughter of Joan Watt, this Sunday. So come along and join us in praying that this would mark the start of a lifetime of following Jesus for Leonora.

Two other bits of news to look out for:

  1. Tickets are live for Beer and Carols! An evening at Firebird Brewery in Rudgwick, tasing the beers, singing some carols, and hearing the wonderful good news of Jesus at Christmas. This year it will be on Tuesdays the 9th &16th of December. For more info, and to book tickets, read on below.

  2. We are going to start alternating where we meet for our Year of Prayer between Alfold and Loxwood. We will meet each Monday morning, in the Church Room of the church we met in on Sunday. Clear as mud? If we worshipped in Loxwood on Sunday, we will pray in Loxwood on Monday. This week we will gather in Alfold Church Room from 9am-12. Come and pray!

We meet twice this coming Sunday morning in Alfold Church. Looking together at Colossians 3:1-14…

  • 8:30am - BCP Holy Communion

  • 10:00am - Family Worship and Baptism, with groups for the kids & followed by refreshments.

Just remember that the clocks go back this weekend!

Everyone is welcome & we’d love to see you there!

With love in Christ,

Revd. James Forward

Whats happening in Alfold and Loxwood this week?

Dear Friends,

How does belonging to Jesus change: Who you are? Where you are? And how you live for him? Well, in Church on Sunday we are going to be looking for answers from these wonderful words…

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”

Colossians 3:1-4. NIV 1984.

Whats happening in Alfold and Loxwood this week?

Dear Friends,

As the classic Harvest hymn goes…

“All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above. Then thank the Lord, Oh thank the Lord, for all his love”.

(I bet you can’t read that without hearing the tune!)

This coming Sunday at 10am we are celebrating Harvest together, with our ALL-AGE Harvest service. The children will stay in church throughout, as we sing, and pray, and give thanks to God for all that he gives us. Everyone’s invited. All are welcome.

Psalm 104, our focus for Sunday, says this…

When you open your hand, they are satisfied with good things.

We meet twice this coming Sunday morning in Alfold Church. Looking together at Psalm 104…

  • 8:30am - BCP Morning Prayer

  • 10:00am - ALL-AGE Harvest Celebration with Communion, followed by refreshments.

We’d love to see you there!

Whats happening in Alfold and Loxwood this week?

Dear Friends,

What would ‘fullness’ in the Christian life feel like? And more importantly - how can it be achieved?

Lots of people might be able to give you an answer: religion, tradition, experience, rules. They are all places we might be tempted to look for the fuller life.

But Paul in our passage for Sunday wants us to know one thing. WE HAVE FULLNESS IN CHRIST ALREADY. Anywhere else we might be tempted to look is going to empty us, not fill us up. They are a shadow of the real thing, and not nearly as good.

We meet twice this coming Sunday morning in Loxwood Church. Looking together at Colossians 2:16-23…

  • 8:30am - BCP Morning Prayer

  • 10:00am - Family Communion Service with groups for the kids, and followed by refreshments.

And once in Alfold for Evensong

  • 6pm - Evensong - Psalm 142

We’d love to see you there!

With love in Christ,

Revd. James Forward

N.b. Please note that Monday Morning’s prayer will happen in Alfold Church Room!

Whats happening in Alfold and Loxwood this week?

Dear Friends,

The world’s biggest tree is General Sherman. A Giant Sequoia found in California. It measures 83 meters tall, and is 7.7meters in diameter.

How does a tree get to be that big? The answer is simple! By staying in the same place.

That is the theme of our service on Sunday. Stay rooted in the gospel! Paul writes to Colossians “Just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him.” Colossians 2v6&7.

That is what Richard Allan will be preaching on, with the encouragement that the way into the Christian life is the way on. That the fullest Christian life isn’t gained by moving on from the gospel, but by growing deeper roots into it.
